Introduction
|
Archaeological investigation and documentation is being undertaken on the site bounded by George and Charles Streets in Parramatta. A large team of archaeologists started work at this site on Tuesday 14 June 2005.
Through comprehensive archaeological and heritage assessments, the 101 George Street site has been identified as having the potential to contain extensive and varied archaeological deposits, features and relics encompassing:
- Evidence of pre-European involvement
- Evidence of European efforts to clear the site
- Evidence of European occupation from 1790 to the 1920’s, including building foundations, deposits, wells, outbuildings, drainage, property boundaries and other landscaped features and cultural material.
The archaeological resource has been assessed to be of high cultural significance, documenting a long and continuous history of varied occupation at the site.
The archaeological investigation can be followed by viewing our Archaeologists Progress Reports and photo gallery.
The Excavation Director for the 101 George Street site is Wendy Thorp of Cultural Resources Management
